Went around the house and shot some video and still photos using the iPhone
2. Created a project in iMovie for iOS devices (link)
3. Arranged the photos and video in iMovie
4. Added titles in iMovies
5. Save the project in iMovie on the iPhone
6. Imported the movie from iPhone to iPhoto on the Mac
7. Exported the iPhoto movie to various compressed sizes from iPhoto (this uses Quicktime)
8. Uploaded the movie to Flickr and this blog. Flickr has the largest export from QT, this blog has the medium compressed file)

Here is the Flickr version. Flickr limits to 90 secs, so, it is a little cut off.

PC's users, I am sure the process is pretty easy on your computers as well. I don't know what the iPhoto equivalent is on PCs.

File uploaded to Flickr was 44 Mb, file uploaded to Blogger (youtube) was 11Mb. I have no idea how Flickr and/or YouTube compress after uploading, but, this give you a chance to see the difference.

Whole project took 1 hour with the majority of the being uploading from computer to Flickr and Blogger

EDIT: uploaded the video to my YouTube account a link it here, much better. I found out that QuickTime on my Mac can upload directly to my You Tube account, nice touch QT.

New to iPhone iPod touch - Here are some features to remember, Pt 2

Happy New Year Everybody!

Let's start the New year of right with a few more iPhone/iPod features. Why? Read this story from my friend at Pariahware.

Sad story, cell phone stolen from a hospital patient. But realize this; don't be naive. Your iPhone that you like so much, so does the rest of the world. It is small, easily stolen and easily sold via eBay, Craigslist, etc.. for a handsome amount.

Register your iPhone with the Mobile Me service and make sure you know how to use it.

If you should be unable to locate your phone, the key here is to quickly log into me.com and look for it. Rationally sort it out and if you think it is stolen, contact the police. Aided with some persistence from you, I think there is a good chance police will pursue; there is a good chance of solving a crime, and a likely chance of breaking up a small time theft ring.

Movies

Your iPhone 4/ iPod touch 4 gen is a movie camera. HD as well. The cheapest Flip HD costs what $150 retail, consider it money saved. Movie making with your iPhone is a topic unto itself, I can't possibly go over all that here. Quickly, a thought or two.

-- I recorded a 16 second movie. the resulting file was 16 Mb. There may be some compression involved when you upload or send the file via MMS, but, watch what data network you are using when transferring video. If you are on 3G, you will quickly burn though a 250 Mb monthly data plan transferring video. Though I don't know it for sure, but, I highly suspect sending multi-media via MMS will count towards for 3G data usage. Sharing video might be best done via upload to the internet with WIFI or connected to a computer iOS device.

--The iMovie application is a sure bet. I have quickly played with it and it will make great, on the fly movies using both video on your iPhone (iPod touch 4th gen too) as well as use your pictures. I am a fan of iMovie for the Mac, so, iMovie for iOS devices is a very good investment of $5 for sure. (come on, $5, geesh). It won't make you the next Kubrick, but will get you close to Ken Burns ( :) ).

Brevity is a key to success in blogging. I'll keep these short, post more later.

Again, Happy New Year.

More on the iPhone-iPod touch

My last post was a listing of 4 iPhone/iPod touch features that I think are pretty nifty. My motivation is, while the device is new, post a few notes, learn a few thing, get more from your gadget while your are still in the learning mode. Bookmark it, come back to it, refresh your memory.

Here are a few more thoughts on my new iPhone.

Cases

A quick break from features and a word on cases for you iPhone. My first iPhone, iPhone v1, of course I wanted a case for it. It was quite an investment and I wanted to keep it nice looking for a long time. I went straight to the Apple store and sought advice, then shelled out $30 bucks for a case that after a week I threw away. Disgusted with the whole affair, I never put the phone back in another case. After 3 years, the front of the phone stayed in pretty good shape, one or two scratches after threes years in my pocket, not bad. The back of the phone, not so much.

This time, I am once again wanting to keep the phone in good shape. Here is what I am looking for:

-Lightweight, I carry the phone on me, no need for additional bulkiness or weight.
-Smooth, something with a rubbery or too textured feel will be difficult to get in and out of my pocket while driving down the road. This was the single reason the last case sucked and was tossed.
-I'm not too worried about the front, the last phone survived ok and Apple says the iPhone 4 front glass has a harder surface.

That's what I need. I think I have found it. iFrogz Luxe Lean . I purchased at Best Buy for $30 and the color selection was better than on the iFrogz website. So far I really liking it.

Enough on cases.

Typing on a touch screen

If I were 12, I'm betting I could type on the iPhone with blazing speed. I'm not 12, am 46. There is plenty of research that adults have an easier time learning to use a tactile feedback mini-keyboard than touch screen. I have not read research that says once adults master a touch screen keyboard that it is any better or worse the tactile feedback. So, learning is what you need with the iPhone. Tips:

- Use your thumbs and use both hands! Don't let yourself poke the keyboard, use your thumbs. Apple designed it with thumbs in mind. I have better luck with the inside-upper-corners of my thumb pads.

- Learn some of the keyboard shortcuts.

Here are some keyboard shortcut.

--Double tap space for a period.
--For capital letters, tap the shift key and slide your thumb to the letter. Tap slide is easier than tap tap.
--For ? ! & = [ ] $, tap the "123" and slide to the character. The keyboard will automatically switch back to "alpha" when you are done and, again, tap slide is easier than tap tap.
--Keep an eye on the results of your typing and not the keyboard. Let auto-fill do its job. When a word is correctly suggested, tap the space to auto-fill.

More from Apple on typing.

Now, while your are learning to type on this tiny keyboard, think about typing on this tiny keyboard. After a while, you will build speed and quit thinking about how to type on the tiny keyboard.

Ok, this post is long enough. More later. Happy New Year. More to come.

New to iPhone iPod touch - Here are some features to remember, Pt 1

I have found that when I get a new gadget, especially one with tons of features, it is best to learn all you can right away, After you have had it for a while, your routine familiarity with the device overcomes your eagerness to learn. So, with my iPhone 4 only two days out of the box here are a few features I have found useful. Many of these feature are available on earlier models of the iPhone (iPod touch as well), so, really they are just new to me. They may be new for you as well, so, bookmark this post, you might find it useful.

Folders

Originally, there were no apps. Then came apps and the iPhone could have pages of icons, swipe left and right. After enough time and apps and a failure to keep them organized, this becomes a confusing mess. With the iPhone running iOS 4.2 you can create folders to consolidate your applications and then have pages of folders if your collection of apps is very large. This is very handy and can keep you from having to scroll though pages to find similar apps.

I have a folder called "Social," and it has Facebook, Twitterriffic, Instagram and a few other utilities that I like to use with my social media sites. I keep the folder on page 1 and it is far easier than trying to locate these programs in a sea of icons. Give folders a chance.

Most recent programs

Double click the home button and your last four programs will be revealed. Yes, it is that simple. And if you will remember it is there, you'll find it handy as well.

Voice Control

I hate fumbling with the phone while driving. Press and hold the home button and you will activate voice control. Say, for example, "Call Mary" and the iPhone will guide you thorough all the Mary's in your contacts and then through a specific Mary's various phone numbers.

HDR photos

HDR = High Dynamic Range photograph. Here is a link to some HDR examples on flickr. Truly captivating technique. Basically, HDR photography is three shots of the same scene sandwiched together. One frame is underexposed, one normally exposed and one overexposed. Bring the three together and voila, lots of detail.

The iPhone implementation is not as good as the examples from flickr. Not even close, but, in low light and bright light situations, it does bring improved photos taken from a cell phone camera. Here is an article explaining the iPhone HDR implementation better.

For some added fun, try using the filtering programs like Instagram or Camera Bag. iPhone HDR then can deliver some impressive, interesting results. (for a cell phone camera)

That's enough for now. Look for Part 2, I have more. (Also, I don't own an iPod Touch, so I don't know what is and isn't available on that device, but, much of this is, I suspect.)

Next post on this subject: Cases and Typing

Migrating from iPhone v 1 - v 4 and MMS

Just a short post about a fairly obscure problem migrating from iPhone v 1 directly to iPhone v 4.

iPhone version 1 did not support Multimedia Message Service (MMS) only Short Message Service (SMS or Text only messaging). I received an iPhone v 4 for a Christmas present, that meant I was going from iPhone v1 to v4. Purchased the phone at an Apple store and made the necessary ATT account changes while there. Thought everything was fine.

Came home eager to try all the features of the new phone, but, MMS did not work. Interesting, Chris, my spousal equivalent, owns an iPhone 3 GS, he couldn't send MMS either. Naturally, I thought there must be a network problem, he has never had a problem before with MMS.

This really bugged me so I decided to go to an ATT store, a corporate operated store like this one.

I was really going by to see if there was a network issue. No network issue. The issue is an obscure setting on the ATT network to turn on MMS for accounts that have the first gen. iPhone plan. So, going to a corporate ATT store is important. And them expect a wait why they diagnose the problem.

After they make the account adjustment, you'll need to reset network settings on the phone. Ahh, MMS works. Yay

But, I get home and Chris' MMS is still not working. The fix, reset network settings on his iPhone. Now he is back in business as well. Chris and I have a ATT iPhone family plan and I my phone is the "alpha" phone on the plan. I suspect that is why the migration affected his phone as well as mine. Regardless, if you are migrating from ATT iPhone plan version 1 to iPhone 4, and experience MMS failure, my experiences might help you.

Apple is Geting all Magicky

Apple introduces the Magic Trackpad. I am such an aviation buff and really, in many respects, the Apollo 11 mission was a pinnacle of aviation achievement. I found myself totally absorbed in reading the annotated transcripts of the mission radio transmissions. Those transcripts along with other reading about the mission led me to write about my thoughts on Apollo 11.

1. First Steps vs. There and Back

For most of us Apollo 11 was about the first humans landing on the moon. After that, many think about NASA scientists and the potential for scientific experimentation in an extraterrestrial environment, maybe that was the mission for Apollo 11.

That isn't what the mission was about, at least from the point of Neil, Mike, Buzz, and the balance of the NASA team. Apollo 11 was really about engineering, about building a spacecraft that could take someone to the moon and back. The focus of most of the training and previous missions was about making the spacecraft perform.

The moon walk and experiments were really window dressing. Nice window dressing, but, totally secondary to the mission.
2. We still get facts wrong today.
People have an insatiable appetite for tasty little tidbits of fun facts. Take this little nugget from Popular Science:

When Buzz Aldrin joined Armstrong on the surface, he had to make sure not to lock the Eagle's door because there was no outer handle.

Now, isn't that a nasty little nugget. But it is stuff of urban legends. Here is how the legend started. From the transcript:

109:41:28 Aldrin: Okay. Now I want to back up and partially close the hatch. (Long Pause) Making sure not to lock it on my way out.

109:41:53 Armstrong: (Laughs) A particularly good thought.

A little joking on the moon gets turned into *OMG we could have been locked out and stuck on the moon.* Actually there was a handle on the outside of the hatch.

Now, what would have happened if the cabin should have begun to re-pressurize while the hatch were latched and Neil and Buzz were outside the LM? That door, then, could have been impossible to open. But, the pressure dump could be operated from the outside as well. See, this mission was about engineering.

Here is another Popular Science gets wrong, lots of people do actually:

The "one small step for man" wasn’t actually that small. Armstrong set the ship down so gently that its shock absorbers didn’t compress. He had to hop 3.5 feet from the Eagle’s ladder to the surface.

Sure he hopped 3.5 feet from the last rung of the ladder. But, that wasn't the small step of fame. The hop was to the LM's landing footer. See the round disk at the bottom of the support struts in this picture. That is what Neil hopped down onto. From that he stepped onto the moon's surface. Small detail, but Neil Armstrong didn't hop 3.5 feet onto the moon's surface.

3. 1969 Rocked for Aviation

Not only did we have the first people on the moon, but, 1969 saw the Boeing 747 fly.

Pan Am put this plane in service the very next year. So, we all watched a miracle of a spacecraft on the moon. Then we all could participate by flying this colossal aircraft. Aviation was coming to us all. What the world must have thought about us Americans. Wow, we are amazing. True.

4. The Surface of the Moon is a Powder

Reading the transcripts, I was impressed with the detail the Buzz and Neil used in describing the surface of the moon. Charcoal powder. Buzz was especially impressed with how the dirt behaved when kicked. Without an atmosphere to disperse the particles, the dirt would just fan out and drop back to the moon. It must have been something to see. He seemed fascinated.

It isn't just the dirt, though. Both Armstrong and Aldrin obviously spent sometime before the mission learning how important it would be to communicate back to the folks on the ground exactly what it was like to be on the moon. While they were on the moon, their descriptions were extensive. It was a detail not overlooked by either Neil or Buzz.

5. What did you say - I said Bravery

Again, reading the transcripts, the most common radio communication - Repeat, say again, what did you say. The tenuousness of the radio communication served to remind me just how tenuous this mission really was. It took real bravery for our astronauts to agree to Apollo 11. It took tremendous focus to complete than mission. What heros these men were.

Finally, enjoy this tasty nugget of a factoid. People can't resist, you know.

When you listen to the recordings of the radio transmissions, you'll heard a beep at the start of some transmission and a beep at the end of those transmissions. What are they?

Quindar tones - read all about them

10 Movies

It is Oscar time. I love the movies. Here is a list of some of my favorites.

"The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" (1948) - Interesting fact, John Houston directs his father, Walter Houston, in this movie. His father wins an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Flash forward to 1985 and John Houston directs his daughter in "Prizzi's Honor" for which Angelica Houston wins an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Gotta love the movie that gave us the line "Badges? We ain't got no badges. We don't need no badges! I don't have to show you any stinkin' badges!" See if you can spot a very young Robert Blake in the movie.

"North by Northwest" (1959) - Ok this one falls into the category, movies I wish I could erase from my memory and see again for the first time. I think this is first "magic box" movie I can recall seeing. Magic Box movie is a tweak of a phrase I am borrowing from J.J. Abrams and is a movie in which the viewer remains confused, purposefully, about what is exactly going on until well into the movie. What if I told you I had a magic box and on the inside could be anything you want. Once you open the box and find out what is inside, well, the magic is gone. But, until you open the box, that box that could have anything is pretty magical. If you haven't seen it, see "North by Northwest"

"The Big Sleep" (1946) - No movie list could be complete without a Bogart/Bacall movie and this is a good one. First off it is a Raymond Chandler novel with a screenplay by William Faulkner (et. al.). Yes, that Nobel Prize winning William Faulkner. This movie has it all, people making nudie pictures (we call it porno today) , gambling, corrupt police, murder and plenty of witty repartee. It is 20th Century Fox noir at its finest, what else do you want!?!

"My Favorite Year" (1982) - This movie is king of the zippy one liners. Also one of Peter O'Toole's Oscar nominated roles for which he hasn't won an academy award. "I'm not an actor, I'm a movie star"

"Wings" (1927) - What!?! A silent movie? Yes, Wings is the winner of Best Picture Oscar alpha and the only silent film to do so. Only they didn't call it best picture at first, but, still. Check out the air to air film sequences. How hard was that to do with a hand crank camera? All that plus a male on male kiss and Clara Bow's boob. This movie cost two million to make - that is 1927 dollars, my friend.

"In the Heat of the Night" (1967) - "They call me MISTER Tibbs." This movie is gritty and Best Picture Oscar winner. Crime solving in the racist 1960s south. You know, I woke up and unable to go back to sleep one night. I turned on the TV and this movie was starting. How serendipitous . I think really good movies have this quality that make us feel like we have suspended our world and been told a great story. And we are very aware of that as we re-enter our world. Don't let the TV show of the same name color your perception of the movie.

"What's Up Doc" (1972) - with out a doubt, the-funniest-chase-scene-in-movie-history. Way way way funnier chase than in "The Blues Brothers" or "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" both of which are pretty funny. This movie is a loose re-make of "Bringing Up Baby," an hilarious comedy in its own right.

"Airport" (1970) - da, da, da, DA, da. da, da, DA, da, DA, da. As if the campy theme music wasn't enough to love about this film. I admit it, I am an airplane geek and I love the 1970's disaster movies. This is both. But, so much more. Jacqueline Bisset as the other woman now facing a possible abortion. BTW - yes, that IS Barbara Hale, TV's Perry Mason's girl Friday Della Street, playing Dean Martin's wife. This star studded thriller has Helen Haynes winning an Oscar for best supporting actress. Who says campy can't win an Oscar? Trivia: TWA had a long history of product placement in the movies, see if you can spot the never built TWA Super Sonic Transport. Remember this exchange?

Assistant: "The instruction book said that was impossible!"
Joe Patroni: "That's one nice thing about the 707. She can do everything but read. "

"L.A. Confidential" (1997) - this movie is American crime noir for the end of the 20th century. Prostitutes that imitate movie stars!?! Kim Basinger gets an Oscar in this story of crime and the seedy underside of LA in the 50's.

"The Sting" (1973) - If you put Robert Redford and Paul Newman in a film together, many women go see the movie. At least that was the case in 1973. This movie isn't a chick flick, though. It is a fun story of the long con. The Sting won 7 Oscars including Best Picture. this movie is more comedy than not, thus one of the few winners of Best Picture that are comedies. Also, there was quite a Scott Joplin rag time music craze after this movie, thanks Marvin Hamlisch.

Spiders

Sitting outside near work I felt something drop on my head. I doubt anyone with hair could feel this tiny spider drop onto their head.

Spiders in your hair! You don't get to choose your name. Somehow I ended up with two names, Allen and Al. It's strange when someone asks you if you want to be called this or that. The first answer I come up with is always "Hmmm, I never thought about it."

I'm not sure why I have decided to blog again, I just have. I did this back in the early days of blogging, the 1920's. It was just a proof of concept thing back then. We'll see where this goes. I'll try not to be too blognorant.

I do tweet - can be followed @LQQK

I am a member of the Triangle Macintosh Users Group.
